New Lord Mayor for 2009-10
Since the time of King John, the City of London has had the right to elect its own Lord Mayor and Sheriffs.
The first elected Mayor (the title Lord was added centuries later) was Henry Fitzailwyn, in 1189.
The Lord Mayor and his Sheriffs preside over the 25 strong Court of Aldermen, who in turn head the Corporation of London, which administrates all aspects of the City and City life.
